77 YEARS.
The Crown Market recently celebrated 77 years of being “The Good Food Store” and is committed to continuing our tradition of service to the community with quality Kosher food.
Our History
For over 75 years, The Crown Market has been a staple in West Hartford, CT, serving the Jewish community and beyond with top-quality kosher groceries, deli items, catering, and fresh meats. Established in 1940 by Sam Smith, Sam Sowalsky, and Meyer Goldfield, it began as a group of concessions on Albany Avenue. Over the years, ownership evolved, with the next generations taking the helm.
In 1967, The Crown Market relocated to Bishop’s Corner, expanding its offerings to include pre-packaged kosher meats. Despite a fire in 1970, the store bounced back, thriving under new leadership. In the 1990s, a new generation of owners, including Ralph Seltzer, William Sloat, and Marvin Cremer, continued the legacy.
In September of 2023, The Crown announced Triple Crown Group LLC, an alliance of five visionary leaders as its new owner. The store underwent a series of enhancements. a renewed store layout, improved aesthetics, and enhanced amenities. At the heart of its new vision is a commitment to preserving the Crown’s legacy as a cornerstone of the West Hartford community while entering in a new era of growth, innovation, and exceptional service.
Building upon the foundation of the Crown Market's existing offerings, the new ownership is committed to expanding the product range to cater to diverse culinary preferences. This includes a meticulously curated selection of international kosher foods, organic and health-conscious choices, and an even broader array of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Under the dynamic leadership of managing partners Khen and Debra Raviv, Crown Market is poised for an exciting future of growth and innovation.
